What does obstacle avoidance actually do on a drone?

I keep seeing obstacle avoidance listed as a feature on drones. Can someone explain what it actually does? Does it truly prevent crashes, or is it more of a warning system? How reliable is it?

Obstacle avoidance uses onboard sensors to detect physical objects in the drone's flight path and take action to prevent a collision. There are a few different technologies used across different drones and each has different strengths.

Stereo vision sensors use two cameras facing the same direction, similar to human eyes. The difference between the two images lets the drone calculate distance to objects in that direction. This is the most common system on DJI consumer drones.

Infrared (ToF) sensors emit infrared light and measure how long it takes to reflect back, giving very accurate close-range distance measurements. Often used for downward sensing and precise hovering near the ground.

What it does in practice: In basic mode the sensors detect obstacles and the drone brakes before hitting them. In advanced modes like DJI's APAS (Advanced Pilot Assistance System), the drone will actually navigate around obstacles rather than just stopping.

Important limitations: Obstacle avoidance cannot detect thin objects like power lines or fishing line, struggles in low-contrast conditions (snow, fog), and typically only covers the directions where sensors are installed. Many budget drones have only forward and backward sensors, leaving the sides and top uncovered.

The biggest misconception is that obstacle avoidance makes drones crash-proof. It does not. Power lines are the classic example: thin metallic wires against a sky background are nearly invisible to visual sensors. Many experienced pilots have lost drones to power lines despite having full obstacle avoidance enabled. Always visually scout your area before flying.

APAS (Advanced Pilot Assistance System) on DJI drones is more sophisticated than basic braking. Instead of just stopping, APAS plans a path around the obstacle while keeping the mission going. This is especially useful during automated missions or follow-me modes where the drone needs to continue moving despite trees or structures in the way.

For sport or fast manual flying modes on DJI drones, obstacle avoidance is automatically disabled because the flight speed exceeds the sensor processing speed. If you switch to Sport mode, always be aware that you are flying without that safety net and need to rely entirely on your own awareness of the environment.

Budget drones often advertise obstacle avoidance but may only have infrared sensors facing forward that work at short range. This is much weaker than the full omnidirectional stereo vision found on premium models. Check the spec sheet carefully to understand which directions are covered and at what detection range before trusting the feature fully.
