What causes drone flyaway and how do I prevent it?

I have read about drones flying away uncontrollably and never returning. What actually causes this to happen and what can I do to prevent it? I am new to drones and this is one of my biggest concerns before starting to fly.

Drone flyaways are one of the most feared events for any pilot, and they almost always come down to one of four root causes.

1. Compass interference or miscalibration. Metal objects, power lines, or buildings with steel reinforcement can corrupt compass data. When the compass gives bad directional information, the drone loses its orientation reference and may fly erratically or in the wrong direction when you give stick inputs.

2. GPS signal loss or spoofing. In areas with tall buildings, dense trees, or radio interference, GPS accuracy drops. The drone may enter Attitude mode (Atti mode) where it no longer holds position, drifting with wind until it is out of range.

3. Incorrect return-to-home setup. If RTH altitude is set too low, the drone may fly into trees or buildings on the way back. If the home point was not set correctly (the drone did not acquire enough GPS satellites before takeoff), RTH may fly the drone to the wrong location.

4. Signal loss without proper failsafe. Flying beyond range with no failsafe configured means the drone has no instruction when it loses contact.

Prevention checklist: Always wait for GPS lock (at least 10 satellites) before takeoff. Calibrate the compass away from metal structures. Set RTH altitude higher than the tallest obstacle near you. Never take off in areas with strong electromagnetic interference.

A small GPS tracker attached to the drone is worth considering as extra insurance. Devices like Apple AirTag, Tile, or dedicated drone trackers can help you locate a downed or flown-away drone after the fact. They are not foolproof (range is limited) but have helped many pilots recover drones that would otherwise be lost for good.

Atti mode deserves extra attention. Modern DJI drones may switch to Atti mode automatically when GPS or the compass fails. In Atti mode the drone maintains altitude using its barometer, but drifts freely with wind since there is no position hold. New pilots who do not recognize this mode often panic and make the situation worse. Practice switching to Atti intentionally in a safe open area so you know how it feels.

Always do a fresh compass calibration when flying in a new location, especially near coastlines or in cities. Urban environments with lots of steel and electrical infrastructure mess with compass readings more than most beginners realize. Moving just 50 meters from a large metal structure can make a calibration invalid.

Flight logs record GPS signal strength, compass status, battery levels, and signal quality throughout the flight. Reviewing them helps you spot warning signs before they become actual problems, like consistently weak GPS in a particular area you fly.
