What is the best drone for the money in 2024?

I do not have an unlimited budget and want to get the most value from whatever I spend. What drones in 2024 offer the best combination of features, reliability, and quality for their price, at different budget tiers?

The DJI Mini 3 at $299 is the best drone for the money in 2024 at any price point. For $299 you get a 249g GPS drone with 4K/60fps video, 3-axis mechanical gimbal, D-Log M color profile, RAW photo support, three-directional obstacle avoidance, return to home, and 38-minute rated flight time. No other drone under $400 comes close to this feature set. It is genuinely capable of producing professional-looking footage, not just acceptable footage for the price.

At the $700 to $800 range, the DJI Mini 4 Pro is the best value with omnidirectional obstacle avoidance and an upgraded 1/1.3-inch sensor delivering noticeably better low-light performance. Above $1,000, the DJI Air 3 with dual cameras is the choice for content creators who need both wide and medium telephoto perspectives. At each tier, DJI offers more value per dollar than any competitor currently available in the market.

Under $200, the DJI Neo at $199 is the best value for casual users. Pocketable, basic obstacle avoidance, GPS, 4K video, and remarkably easy to fly with one hand or from a phone. The sensor is smaller than the Mini 3 and flight time shorter at around 18 minutes, but the price and portability make it a compelling entry point for social media creators who want aerial shots without carrying a large kit.

The Neo is not the right choice for anyone who wants to grow into serious aerial photography or videography. The image quality ceiling is lower than the Mini 3 and the flight time is short for shooting sessions. But as a grab-and-go social media drone for someone who will not fly daily, it is excellent value at $199.

The Potensic Atom SE at around $150 is the best value under $200 from a non-DJI brand. GPS position hold, return to home, 4K video with a 3-axis gimbal, and 31-minute rated flight time. These are real GPS drone features at a price closer to toy drones. Image quality is below DJI Mini 3 but dramatically better than the no-GPS budget drones that dominate the under-$150 market.

For pilots who genuinely cannot afford the Mini 3 but want a real GPS flying experience, the Atom SE is the best stepping stone available. It will satisfy casual pilots long-term and gives serious pilots enough of a foundation to develop skills before upgrading. It is not a toy and should not be compared to the $50 to $80 offerings that share the budget aisle.

Refurbished and open-box DJI drones are worth considering for budget-conscious buyers. DJI's official refurbished store sells units that have been inspected, repaired, and certified at 10 to 20 percent below retail price. A refurbished DJI Mini 3 at $240 or a refurbished Mini 4 Pro at $620 represents strong value with full DJI warranty coverage. Amazon renewed and Best Buy open-box programs also offer DJI drones at discounts with return guarantees.

The advantage of going refurbished on a quality DJI over buying a new budget brand drone is getting proven reliability and a complete ecosystem at a reduced price. The refurbished DJI is a significantly better product than any new $200 competing drone, even after accounting for the age of the unit.

The mistake most buyers make when evaluating value is comparing feature lists rather than experience quality. A $150 drone with GPS and 4K video on paper sounds comparable to a $299 DJI Mini 3. In practice the experience is dramatically different: DJI's flight controller, gimbal quality, image processing pipeline, and software integration are in a different league. Specs are comparable on paper; actual use reveals enormous differences in stability, footage quality, and reliability.

Best value summary for 2024: under $200 go DJI Neo or Potensic Atom SE. At $300 go DJI Mini 3, no contest. At $750 to $800 go DJI Mini 4 Pro. At $1,100 go DJI Air 3. Buy the best DJI your budget allows rather than the most-featured budget alternative at the same price point. You will be more satisfied long-term.
